    Support Horizons is a community owned company working in the social care sector, primarily in the area of learning disabilities. We offer an ethical alternative to existing employment agencies – providing trained and vetted temporary workers for the sector.

    The company also provides genuine employment opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, both within the business itself and as consultants who are available for help with training, awareness of disability issues, quality auditing and recruitment. As a social enterprise any profits from the business will be re–invested into the community and will not go for private gain.

    New support group for people with a learning disability who have epilepsy
    You will get the chance to:
    ·    Talk to other people who have epilepsy
    ·    Understand your seizures and how to manage them
    ·    Learn about the tablets you take
    ·    Have help to talk to your doctor about your seizures

    If you are interested, please come along to a meeting to find out more on the 4th September at the Bradbury Community Centre, Rose Street at 1pm. You can also contact Mary Codling on 0118 949 2932 or talk to your supporter.

    New Coffee Morning for Parents and Carers

    Monday mornings from 9.15am to 11.30am
    Bulmershe Youth Centre, Woodlands Avenue, Woodley, RG5 3UE.
    Cathy Fastnedge from ASD Family Help, and Kay Nicker, Youth Worker at Bulmershe Youth
    Centre have come together to create a space where parents and carers of all disabled children can
    meet and feel less isolated in their day to day lives. Parents can discuss issues affecting their
    children and families, and find out relevant and supportive information. Children and young
    people are able to attend. There are plenty of toys and games available for all ages.
    In time, the group hopes to recruit an experienced Youth Worker to help families and young
    people, especially those excluded from school or with challenging behaviour.
    The only cost is a small charge towards refreshments. Do drop in for a drink and a chat.

    free Family Swim Sessions

    Families with children with additional needs are welcome at an exclusive FREE Family Swim Session once a month.
    It is running on Saturdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at Carnival Pool, Wellington Road, Wokingham, RG40 2AF. Sessions
    take place on the following dates:
    2009 - 8, September 5, October 10, November 14, December 5
    2010 - January 9, February 6, March 6, April 3, May 8
    All family members can attend and spaces do not need to be pre-booked. Extra changing beds will be available if
    required. The pool has flumes and water features, and will also have inflatable toys out for use!

    Wokingham Mencap Clubs

    Siblings Club

    Mencap is running a new Siblings Club in Wokingham, starting on Thursday May 7. It will be held at the Bradbury Centre, Rose Street Methodist Church, RG40 1XS from 5pm to 6.45pm. Woodley Siblings Club is running from Monday April 27 and currently has a few spaces available. Siblings aged eight to 14 years, of children with any additional need are welcome to attend either club.
    Both clubs are managed by experienced play workers and offer a variety of activities, giving children the chance to have fun and chat to other young people in similar situations. A small cost of £1 per week is charged per child.

    Activity Club
    The Children’s Activity Club is open to all children with learning disabilities and their siblings.
    Sessions take place on Saturdays from 9.30am to 11.15am at The Crescent Centre, Lower Earley, RG6 4HB. The cost is £2
    per session and parents and carers must stay on site, but there is a café area where they can relax during this time.

     

    Children's Centre Activities

    Children’s Centres are now open in many areas of the Wokingham Borough. They offer a variety of services for families with children aged from birth to five years-old. Children with additional needs are welcome at all of the sessions provided by the Centres. Resources and services are also being developed, including the purchasing of sensory equipment, special toys, and adapted seating. Activities offered vary at each Centre.
